December 19th, 2008 (again)

A week and a half ago we had to have Tracy Lynn, one of our older horses,
euthanized. Her health was failing and her quality of life had deteriorated
significantly since her herd mate, Momo, passed away in June. We struggled
with the decision for months, trying to find ways to help the mare pull through
but knowing it was futile. In the end, we had to say goodbye.
The sadness of this event makes us think of all the other horses that have
touched our lives forever and passed on.

Richie, with his floppy ears and soft brown eyes, greeted friends and
strangers alike with undeniable sweetness.

Ancient Momo, who had the peppiest "trantor" you could hope for.

Toddy, the beautiful "redheaded" mare, who went from auction reject to
beloved partner.

And Cookie, with a heart as large as his great grand-sire Man O’War’s,
taught students to fly over fences, to canter without fear, and to revel in the
glory that is the horse.

We have lost so many friends in the past two years. It hurts to know that we
will continue to face that loss, as our true companions age so much quicker
than we. But there is comfort in the knowledge that they will never be
forgotten. The people who have groomed them, ridden them across fields
and through streams, bathed their wounds, buried tear-streaked faces in
manes for comfort, they are the ones who keep them alive. Our horses have
touched our lives, given their nobility and grace, their strength and courage,
to we weaker beings. And those of us who share our hearts with such
special creatures should always be grateful for the time we’re given,
because deep down, each of us knows it will never be enough.

Rest in Peace, beloved friends. You are missed.

FIrst of all, a big (belated) welcome to Mandy, our new daytime barn manger.
We look forward to having her as part of our barn family and thank her for all
the effort she’s put in already!

Now on with the show…
Brrrr! When the horses come in with icicles hanging off their whiskers, you
KNOW it’s cold! So to lighten your spirits, we’re giving you the words to our
own little carol (sung to the tune of Jingle Bells). Enjoy!

In the morning we get up
Working before dawn
Early morning ride…
(No hoofprints on the lawn!)

Come back and untack,
Clean bridles, saddles too.
There’s no slowing down
There’s lots of work to do!

Oh!
Rushing here, rushing there
Shovel some more hay.
The big one’s getting all of it
And the little one’s in the waaaay!

Muck the stalls, patch the fence.
So many things to do.
Our day ends at a quarter past ten
So goodnight to all of you!
